A REVIEW ABOUT GREEN SHIELD OF ODISHA, BHITARKANIKA

Mangroves are extremely important bio-resources that are crucial to coastal environment. Indian mangrove vegetation covers about 6.756 sq.km along the 7516.6 km long coast line, including island territories. Majority of the mangrove habitats are now threatened by various factors such as reduction in fresh water flow, marine and coastal pollution, siltation, sedimentation and excessive salinity. The present work is focused on assessing the status of mangroves plant with special reference to Bhitarkanika. Periodical floristic surveys are needed to monitor and preserve the rich mangrove plant diversity in India. Effective governance structures, better planning for rehabilitation of degraded mangroves, education and awareness building in local communities are needed for protect and restore the valuable mangrove wetland ecosystem.
